The word ‘chalisa’ means 40 verses. There are chalisas written on most Hindu gods. Among the most popular ones is the Hanuman chalisa. Chalisas are spiritually enervating and uplifting.

The Hanuman chalisa was written by Tulsidas during his imprisonment by Aurangzeb. It is an invocation to Hanuman, written to impart strength, wisdom and knowledge to the devotee. Hanuman is also known as Sankat Mochan—the remover of obstacles and dangers from one’s life.

In astrology, the natural malefic planets are Saturn, Mars, Rahu and Ketu. This Chalisa is specifically recited to appease both Mars and Saturn.

In its positive aspect, Mars represents energy, dynamism, and courage. If afflicted in a horoscope, it brings about conflicts, enmity, and bloodshed. Similarly, Saturn is the significator of disease and death. On a positive note, it brings about detachment and ensures justice.

Chanting the Hanuman Chalisa on Tuesdays and Saturdays appeases both these planets. It is also very helpful in negating the effects of sade-sati, the seven-and-a-half-year transit of Saturn in the house before, over, and after the houses where the natal Moon is positioned. The malefic nature of these planets gets reduced as also their potential to do harm.

It is believed that the Chalisa should be chanted eight times daily for maximum impact.

In a horoscope, a person is said to be manglik if Mars is positioned in the 1, 2, 7, 8, or 12 house. The placement of Mars in these houses is considered detrimental to a happy married life. Chanting the Hanuman Chalisa is said to ensure a peaceful and contented conjugal life.

There is a Mangalacharan temple in Ujjain where according to folklore, Mars made his first appearance from the earth. He is worshipped specifically by couples there.

There are five famous choupais of the Chalisa which can be separately chanted for specific problems/issues.

  • If one is suffering from an illness which is chronic (Saturn) or acute (Mars) the stanza to be chanted is

nase rog hare sab peeda
Japat nirantar hanumat beeda.

  • When the mind is agitated and there are psychological disturbances, one should chant

Bhoot pisach nikat nahi aave
Mahavir jab naam sunave

  • For faring well in exams and for general education and intellect, (Mercury), one chants

Vidyawan guni ati chatur
Ram kaaj karibe ko atur.

  • For physical strength and prowess, one chants

Bheem roop dhari asur sanhare
Ramchandra ke kaaj sawanre.

  • For enhancing spirituality, signified by Jupiter, one chants

Asht sidhi nau nidhi ke data
Asbar deen Janki Mata.
The Hanuman Chalisa strengthens the entire horoscope encompassing mind, body, and intellect. It brings all the malefic planets in a chart, with their various manifestations, under control.

The chalisa should preferably be chanted after a bath/shower in the morning. It can also be recited in the evening. It should be chanted while sitting on an asan facing east.

Hanuman is the son of the Wind God, the remover of obstacles, and the biggest devotee of Lord Ram. His devotion to Ram is exemplary. By chanting the Hanuman Chalisa, the planets get activated and we discover the power and strength within us.
