There is something beautiful about waiting for someone you love. In the little prayers
whispered before sunrise, the careful preparation of a thali, and the quiet anticipation of
the moon rising in the night sky, Karwa Chauth celebrates a love that finds its strength in
faith, care and togetherness.
The Story Behind Karwa Chauth
Celebrated on the Chaturthi of Krishna Paksha in the Hindu month of Kartik, Karwa Chauth is
traditionally observed by married women who fast and pray for the well-being, prosperity
and long life of their husbands.
Its traditions are rooted in ancient stories of devotion, including the tale of Queen
Veeravati, whose unwavering love and faith became central to the festival's folklore. Over
generations, Karwa Chauth has evolved into a celebration of marital commitment, heartfelt
prayers and the sacred bond between two people.
Traditions That Bring the Festival to Life
The day begins before sunrise with Sargi, a pre-dawn meal often lovingly prepared by the
mother-in-law. As the day unfolds, women dress in beautiful traditional attire, adorn their
hands with mehendi, gather for prayers and listen to the Karwa Chauth Katha.
As evening approaches, the decorated puja thali becomes the centre of the celebration. The
most awaited moment arrives with the rising moon, when women offer their prayers, view
the moon through a sieve and then look at their husbands before breaking their fast.
One Festival, Many Expressions of Love
In Punjab and Haryana, Karwa Chauth is celebrated with vibrant gatherings, colourful attire,
folk songs and cherished family traditions. In Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, women come
together for rituals, storytelling and prayers, often exchanging decorated karwas as symbols
of goodwill and prosperity. Across Delhi and other parts of India, the festival blends age-old
customs with modern celebrations, bringing families together across generations.
Though rituals may differ from region to region, the sentiment remains the same: love is
nurtured through care, commitment and shared traditions.
The Deeper Meaning of Karwa Chauth

Beyond the fasting and festivities, Karwa Chauth holds a deeper emotional and spiritual
significance. It reflects sankalp — the strength of a heartfelt intention — and shraddha, the
faith with which prayers are offered.
At its heart, the festival reminds us that relationships flourish through mutual respect,
understanding, sacrifice and gratitude. Today, many couples celebrate its spirit together,
recognising that love and well-being are nurtured by both partners.
As the moon illuminates the night, Karwa Chauth becomes more than a ritual; it becomes a
moment to cherish the promises that hold two lives together.
May the blessings of Maa Parvati bring love, harmony and lasting happiness into every
home, and may every relationship shine with faith, compassion and togetherness.
