Prayer to Vishnu: Some Mantras that You Can Chant and Their Meanings

Lord Vishnu is one of the three gods in the Trinity, the other two being Lord Brahma and Lord Shiva. He is portrayed as the symbol of kindness and love. The lord is known by 108 names in Hindu mythology. His followers are known as Vaishnavites and their faith is called Vaishnavism.

It is said that a person who prays to Vishnu reaps a lot of physical benefits. While you can pray to Vishnu on any day, devotees believe that praying on Thursdays, wearing yellow clothes and offering yellow fruits and/or flowers yields effective results. Reciting the Vishnu Chalisa is believed to help the chanter attain inner peace.

1. Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya 

This is the simplest mantra that is sung in honour of Lord Vishnu. The devotee bows his head in salutation to the lord who dwells in the heart and mind of all living beings.

The reciter is said to be blessed with a compassionate heart that guides him/her be kind and lovable to everyone. He/she will also be able to overcome challenges with relative ease.

2. Tvameva Mata Ca Pita Tvameva Tvameva Bandhush-Ca Sakhaa Tvameva

Tvameva Vidyaa Dravinam Tvam-Eva Tvameva Sarvam Mama Deva Deva

This mantra is believed to be very powerful and addresses the god as the devotee’s mother, father, friend, and brother. The devotee tells him that he/she owes his assets, education and everything around him to the lord. He/she sees salvation and hope in the god.

It is said that Vishnu guides the reciter in all aspects of life and bestows him/her with more power and concentration if the mantra is said with full devotion.

3. Om shreem krishnaya shreem shreem shreem govindaya gopalaya

Golokasundaraya sathyaya nithyaya paramathmane paraya vykhan
Vyrajamoorthayemeghathmane shreem narasimhavapushe namah

This hymn addresses the god as an all-pervasive entity, the Supreme Being and the ultimate truth. It also highlights his several avatars and mentions various names of the lord.

A person who recites this mantra for 91 days is believed to get maximum protection from Vishnu. The mantra also keeps his/her mind free of negative and evil thoughts. It also assists him/her in repenting for the sins committed in the past. The devotee is blessed with success, prosperity, wisdom and wealth.

4. Om Namo Narayanaya

This is another simple but powerful mantra. It is popularly known as Vishnu mool mantra. Mool mantra contains the essence of Truth and its vibrations are extremely powerful, sometimes even enough to change the fate of a person. The chanter prays to the god for a blissful and eternal life.

The chanter is said to be relieved from all physical and material attachments. He/she will not have the fear of death, aging and losses.

The ideal time to say any Vishnu mantra is in the early morning hours between 4 am and 6am, ideally after a shower or bath. This time is known as Brahma Muhurat. It is recommended to say the mantra at least 108 times. The mantras must be said in full reverence and regularly to be blessed by Lord Vishnu.
