Hindus worship multiple Gods and Goddesses. There are several mantras dedicated to each deity. While you can say any mantra of your choice, reciting some mantras are said to be associated with specific purposes such as for success, wealth and happiness to mention just a few. Moreover, it is a common belief among Hindus that some mantras are extra powerful than others. This is why they are said more often.

Read on for a list of some powerful mantras in Hinduism and why they are chanted.

  1. Om

This is the shortest mantra in Hinduism and is sometimes spelt as Aum. An interesting aspect of this single syllable mantra is that it is not dedicated to any specific deity. It is said to epitomise Brahman, the supreme power. This mantra is said to be the source of any sound and is considered to be the sound of the universe resonating at 432Hz frequency.

Chanting this mantra helps to brighten up and purify the reciter’s mind. The mantra can assist in keeping a check on negative feelings like depression and anxiety. It guides the chanter towards progressing outside the ego based self and joining with the divine power.

  1. Om Namah Shivaya

This mantra is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Simply put, this mantra translates to “I bow to Lord Shiva.”. The word namah means respect while shivaya represents alignment with absolute reality. Lord Shiva is believed to be The Destroyer among the Trinity and a key deity among the Hindus. In fact, the Shaivite community considers Him as the supreme power. The mantra is referred to as a five or six syllable mantra. The five syllables are na-ma-shi-va-ya. Each syllable has a different meaning.

This mantra helps the chanter to have good control over his/her mind and work towards self-realisation. It helps the reciter get rid of his/her ego and aids in the rebirth of his/her soul.

Tát Savitúr Váreṇ(i)yaṃ

Dhíyo Yó Naḥ Prachodayat

This mantra is chanted in honour of Goddess Gayatri, the mother of all Vedas. It is listed in the Rig Veda and is a very sacred mantra. There are 24 syllables in this mantra.

This mantra is an invocation to the divine power to illuminate the physical, spiritual and mental realms of the chanter with the divine light. It is also a request to brighten the intellect of the reciter and bless him/her with peace, wisdom and clarity in life.

  1. Om Gam Ganapataye Namaha

This mantra is recited as a dedication to the elephant god, Ganesha. The lord is represented as the remover of obstacles, which is why He is also known as Vigneshwar. The word gam is associated as the sound of the root chakra of the human body. The lord is believed to reside in the root chakra.

This mantra helps the chanter to achieve success in all of his/her ventures. It assists the reciter in moving ahead with a strong sense of determination and will power. Reciting this mantra activates this chakra and keeps the person stable while promoting his/her physical health.

  1. Om Namo Bhagvate Aanjaneyaay Mahaabalaay Swaahaa

This mantra is dedicated to Lord Hanuman, an ardent devotee of Lord Rama. It is said that you must resist this mantra as many times as possible to get the maximum benefit. Most devotees say the mantra 21,000 times.

This mantra assists the chanter in seeking relief from diseases and evil spirits. It also helps to keep nightmares at bay. Moreover, worshipping this God is one of the easiest ways to invoke the blessings of Lord Rama. The reciter also believes that he/she will not have to suffer the evil effects of Ketu among the navagrahas.

  1. Om Tryambakam Yajamahe

Sugandhim Pushti Vardhanam

This mantra helps the reciter get rid of his/her free of death. It is an appeal to God to free the person from the continuous birth and death cycle. The mantra helps the chanter achieve relief from bondage like a cucumber that is released from the vine.

  1. Om Shree Mahalakshmyai Cha Vidmahe Vishnu Patnyai Cha Dheemahi

Tanno Lakshmi Prachodayat Om

This mantra is recited as a dedication to Goddess Lakshmi, one of the principal entities of the Tridevi. It hails her as the consort of Lord Vishnu, the Preserver among the Trinity.

This mantra must be chanted regularly for the person to be bestowed with property and wealth. He/she will also be bestowed with prosperity, happiness, peace and good fortune. It is believed that the mantra yields quick results.

You can incorporate mantra chanting along with your daily spiritual practice like yoga or meditation. Most mantras are compiled in Sanskrit. The mantra that you chant is a matter of personal preference. What is most important is that you understand its meaning and say it correctly without making any mistake in the way each word of the mantra is pronounced.

The above list is just a partial list of some of the most powerful mantras that Hindus opt to chant for their personal needs. This also does not mean that the other mantras are not effective and do not yield the desired results to the reciter.
