Solah Somvar Vrat Katha for narration -

Once upon a time Lord Shiva and Mata Parvati were on a bhraman and they visited the Amravati city. They stopped at a beautiful Shiva temple built by the King of Amravati. Seeing him in a playful mood, Mata Parvati suggested they play a game of dice. As they were about to start their game, a pandit of the mandir walked in. Mata Parvati asked him who the winner will be. The Pandit without thinking too hard about the matter, replied that Lord Shiva will win. Once the game was over, she won and was furious with the Pandit for predicting incorrectly. She cursed him to become a leper. Soon enough, the pandit was suffering from the disease. Three fairies happened to visit the temple after some time had passed by. One of them saw the condition of the poor pandit and told him about the Solah Somvaar Vrat. The brahmin soon practiced the vrat as per the vrat rules and observed the fast for 16 days. He was blessed by Lord shiva of his illness and he was fully cured. Mata Parvati upon one of her visits finds the brahmin to be in a healthy condition, so in her surprise, she asked him how he managed to cure himself. He narrated how the fairies suggested the Solah Somvar Vrat and how it helped him get the blessings of Shiva. She herself decided to observe the 16 Mondays’ fast as her son Kartikeya was displeased and there was some distance between them. When the fast concluded, Kartikeya was drawn back to his mother and he asked her how she managed to fix the bond. She told him about the glorious Monday fast and its many powers.

This impressed Kartikeya who decided to observe the fast to reunite with a brahmin friends of his. The fast miraculously brought them together. The brahmin friend was keen on practicing the vrat himself. He had no particular intention for observing the fast other than seeking the blessings of Lord Shiva. One day the Brahmin was going somewhere when he saw that the swayamvar of the princess was taking place and many princes were there for the ceremony. He stopped by to watch. The elephant with the garland instead of stopping in front of a prince, put the garland on the brahmin and thus he became the groom of the princess and they were married. The princess was taken aback by what had happened, so she soon asked her husband how he managed to win her over at the swayamvar. He narrated that he miracle happened because of his 16 day fat or the Solah Somvar Vrat he had observed to appease Lord Shiva. The princess too practiced the fast with utter devotion to Shiva and she was blessed with a son.
